THE baldessin press & STUDIO

Silvi is a founding member of the Incorporated not for profit association – The Baldessin Press & Studio.

The Baldessin Press & Studio was created in memory of the late George Baldessin (printmaker & sculptor 1939 – 1978), whose original studio is now open to the public for creative use and as a practical legacy to living artists, perpetuating his generous and collaborative spirit.

Set within the idyllic surrounds of the St Andrews bushland, 60 minutes north-east of Melbourne, the Baldessin Press operates from the bluestone studio conceived and built by George and Tess Baldessin in the 1970s. The light-filled studio, consisting of three open spaces, is fully equipped for all forms of intaglio and relief printing—with a large, motorised etching press, two manual geared intaglio presses, and the newly restored 1864 Albion press—as well as the extensive photogravure facilities.

Silvi met Tess Edwards Baldessin in 2001 when The Baldessin Press was just beginning to launch. Silvi and Tess have since formed a partnership to manage and co-ordinate every aspect of Baldessin Studio, together with a team of dedicated volunteers.

Silvi is the studio manager as well as running workshops, tuition and working on specific project with individual artists. Baldessin Studio is Silvi’s primary work space for her own artwork. The space and atmosphere at Baldessin Studio is integral to Silvi’s artwork content. Over the past 18 years, Baldessin Press Studio has given Silvi the opportunity to research and develop the printmaking techniques for which she is known world wide today.
