Desertico 2006

Desetico is the Spanish word for desertification –although these are not images of the desert as such –I’m not looking for the iconic landscape image that we associate with the Australian Outback but rather as a metaphor for what we lack everyday as we go about our list of things to do that is moments of inner stillness, things that call the viewer into a contemplative visual space.

Under the vast and endless skies of these unidentified ephemeral landscapes, spread deserts and plains where one feels the pristine atmosphere of silence so much so that your own breath becomes as loud as your heart beat. Horizons become transient, dissolving away within a gaze and the spaces extends beyond reach. And as you turn to leave, all that could be evidence of presence is seemingly erased.

I hope that this collection of images somehow brings the viewer into a space that embodies the silence that we sometimes search for.
